90 years of Hügli: Diverse range of gourmet products – strong focus

The year was 1935, and an innovation was born in Arbon on Lake Constance: BRODOX, the first industrially produced bouillon cube. The company that developed it had just been founded by Beat Stoffel, named after his inventive plant manager Otto Hügli.

This laid the foundation for specialising in ready-to-cook soups, sauces, bouillons and condiments. From the outset, Hügli focussed on out-of-home catering and served catering customers.

The group is growing

From the beginning of the 1950s, Hügli began to expand by acquiring further companies. Manufacturers of mustard, mayonnaise and tinned vegetables as well as specialised producers of frozen convenience foods were added.

At the beginning of the 1990s, the culinary experts once again emphasised their role as a driving force in the industry: Hügli was the first supplier on the food service market and in food retail in the DACH region to develop products for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free nutrition and further expanded its market share in these segments as well as in the organic sector.

New paths and further growth

However, Hügli was an early pioneer on the market not only at the recipe level, but also in the handling of packaging. This gave rise to the idea of recyclable product packaging in the 1990s. The so-called Gastronorm bowl was introduced as a reusable container for soups, sauces and bouillons. Due to their multiple uses, however, none of these trays were returned by the catering kitchens, but the containers were given a second use as storage containers in the kitchen once the fine Hügli products had been used up.

From the start of the new millennium, additional acquisitions in Switzerland and abroad allowed the Group to grow further in the food service and end consumer segments. These include well-known brands such as Vogeley for sweet dessert creations, the Dutch brand company Bresc, which specialises in freshly chilled garlic and herb products, and the retail brand Tellofix, a universal seasoning.

Today, Hügli owns more than ten food service and consumer brands with different product ranges. They all have one thing in common: with their high level of convenience, they make work easier in professional and private kitchens.
